Johann Sebastian Bach visits the court of Frederick II in Potsdam, Prussia, in the spring of 1747. The encounter between these two giants could not be more strained: Bach, a devout and peace-loving composer, faces off against Frederick, an atheist and military strategist. Despite their differences, Frederick admires Bach’s genius and has devised a challenging musical puzzle to test him, all while amusing his court. As the days unfold, a series of dramatic events ensue, leaving neither man unaffected by the confrontation.

The Score explores the clash between two minds shaped by radically different worldviews. Directed by Trevor Nunn (Cats), this new production—starring Olivier, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winner Brian Cox (Succession)—highlights the tension between art and power, war and peace, in a riveting examination of history and genius.
