Set in Seville, this revival follows Don José, a soldier whose life unravels after a chance encounter with the enigmatic Carmen. Drawn to her defiant spirit and sensuality, José deserts the military, commits violent acts, and ultimately loses control as Carmen shifts her affection to the charismatic bullfighter Escamillo. Bizet’s score underscores a tense descent from desire into delusion, where fatal consequences await.
Originally staged by Calixto Bieito and now revived for the fourth time, this production is directed by Jamie Manton, a two-time Olivier Award nominee. Joan Anton Rechi handles the staging. The revival maintains Bieito’s provocative vision while bringing fresh interpretation to one of opera’s most iconic works.
