Ecofeminist physical theatre by Ephemeral Ensemble, directed by Ramon Ayres.
Set against the backdrop of riversides in Latin America, UPROOTED explores the violent dismantling of communities by colonial capitalism. As territories are redrawn through corporate conquest and environmental destruction, the play follows the lives disrupted and displaced by steel, concrete, and silence. Interwoven with stories of resistance and ancestral memory, the production examines how the ecological crisis intersects with social justice and land sovereignty.
This new work is devised by the multi-award-winning Ephemeral Ensemble, known for their highly physical and politically charged storytelling. The piece is directed by Ramon Ayres. The creative team includes Josephine Tremelling (Lighting Design, also Production Manager), and Alex Paton (Music and Sound Composition), with dramaturgical support from Kirsty Housley and Almiro Andrade.
Commissioned by New Diorama Theatre, UPROOTED was originally developed during Complicité’s Mudlarks International Residency, with further support from Lost Dog, Theatre Deli, and Blue Elephant. Drawing on international collaborations and community input—including from environmental defenders and Indigenous contributors—the production integrates rigorous research with a bold visual and sonic language.
