Lovers torn by war and power in modern Rome; Netrebko, Kurzak, and Hrůša lead Puccini’s drama.
Set in war-torn Rome, Tosca tells the story of singer Floria Tosca and her lover, painter Mario Cavaradossi, whose lives are upended when they cross paths with the brutal police chief, Baron Scarpia. As betrayal and coercion close in, Tosca must make a harrowing choice to save the man she loves.
This Royal Opera production stars Anna Netrebko and Aleksandra Kurzak in the title role, Freddie De Tommaso as Cavaradossi, and Gerald Finley as Scarpia. Jakub Hrůša conducts his first new staging as Music Director, directed by Oliver Mears and designed by Simon Lima Holdsworth.
First performed in 1900, Puccini’s Tosca remains a landmark of the operatic canon. Its 2025 revival places the action in modern-day Rome, blending the composer’s dramatic score with a contemporary visual setting.
