Pop-rock score, all-female cast, and new writing from Nowhere Girls Theatre’s Premieres Season.
Set in 1960s Georgia, The Gardening Club follows five women who form a covert network to distribute birth control pills in a time when access to contraception was illegal. Posing as a suburban gardening club, the group—comprising a determined journalist, an outspoken nurse, the pastor’s rebellious daughters, and a deeply private neighbor—mobilizes against the repressive norms of their era. As they navigate personal trauma and social risk, their collective effort reveals the hidden struggles and unspoken resilience of women behind the facade of postwar domesticity.
The musical is written by Bella Wright and Carleigh McRitchie, whose work explores themes of gender, sexuality, and political resistance through contemporary music forms. Direction is by Belinda Matthews, whose recent credits include productions at fringe and development-focused venues across London. Together, they have created a piece grounded in historical specificity and social urgency, underpinned by a modern pop-rock score.
