About the Show

La MaMa presents the premiere of playwright Jean-Claude van Itallie's drama about a white authoritarian evangelical family, with a father eerily like the occupant of today's White House. NYC Opera sensation Lauren Flanigan stars.

The family lives out its excruciating and abusive confusion of real and virtual on an ancient, dream-like, falling-apart ship of false notions. Filled with rage, despair, and denial, exploited by politicians, preachers, and commercial corporations, the family careens toward catastrophe but also cathartic change.

"Jean-Claude van Itallie, one of the key figures in New York's Off-Off Broadway theater in the 1960's, takes on Trumpian politics in 'The Fat Lady Sings'. Clearly, van Itallie still feels at home at the La MaMa, where he developed some of his most influential early work, including parts of his landmark anti-war trilogy, 'America Hurrah'. The fire in this playwright's belly can still radiate heat in the East Village more than a half century after the premiere of his most famous title."
