Dark comedy musical about six young adults in AA, by Michael Levin and directed by Chris Mackin.
Set in the basement of a Brooklyn church, six young adults in sobriety gather weekly for AA meetings in this darkly comedic two‑act musical. Founded by the gruff but caring “Cap,” the group navigates the difficult, messy, and often humorous terrain of addiction, love, identity, and recovery. What begins as light banter evolves into deeply emotional ballads and sharp dialogue, offering a raw, character‑driven portrait of healing and human connection.
The show features book, music, and lyrics by Michael Levin, a New York Times bestselling author, with direction by Chris Mackin. Supporting creative team members include orchestrators Brian Reynolds and Nancy Loedy, music direction by Reynolds, choreography by Megan Roe, scenic design by Joshua Warner, costume design by Izzy Kitch, lighting design by Annie Garret‑Larson, and sound design by Travis Joseph.
Produced by Michael Levin Writing Co. in association with Loop Troupe and executive produced by Silver Kung, SOBER SONGS runs at Theatre Row’s Theatre One. The cast includes Henry Ryeder, Jason Fio, Arden Agos, Merrill Mitchell, James A. Pierce III*, and Gaea Lawton (*Actors’ Equity).
