"The quality of the work is uniformly strong. The actors are confident, well-rehearsed and skilled at blending farce with poignancy. The directors make adroit use of minimal materials to swiftly create the disparate narrative worlds of the different plays...'Rule of 7 X 7' is a deal that can’t be beat."

"The constrictions of '7x7' beget an array of short plays that are both relevant and ephemeral. The very short time frame ensures that playwrights can draw from the timeliest material...The flip side of '7x7’s' time frame is that some plays and performances will lack the polish of more rehearsed off-Broadway productions...For folks that enjoy improv shows or other experimental theater, '7x7' will be a welcome departure from the finished product of traditionally staged plays."

"Of the seven theatrical ventures featured on the night that I visited, three were brilliant and sharply written pieces that frequently had the audience roaring with laughter. Only two failed to blossom into fully-formed concepts...'Rule of 7×7' combines the best of theatrical entertainment and improvisational art to create a rousing, and often riotous, evening that showcases diverse, young talent in New York City."

James Armstrong, Playwright

"Epstein hosts the series, which takes seven playwrights and asks each writer to write one rule all the plays must follow...The rules help free up imaginations to conceive some wonderfully funny and sometimes surprisingly touching moments. Rachael Mason's 'Funny Seeing You Here,' was probably the best...By the time the audience sees a flashback to what the two characters did earlier, they are practically rolling in the aisles with laughter."

“Led by the incomparable Brett Epstein. Every two months, he calls upon 7 playwrights to contribute a ‘rule’...The ‘Rule of 7x7’ plays are some of the most experimental, fun, joyous, and bizarre works that happen on a regular basis...No two plays are the same. Some are funny, some have made me cry, some make absolutely no sense at all. What they all have in common is boundaries, and even this is a porous barrier."

"‘Rule of 7x7’ is one of our favorite events in Manhattan…The price for attending makes this a no-brainer: $12 includes a free beer from the concession stand. And the plays are usually very funny—and really, really good. Incredibly good, considering the short time they have to throw them together!"

"'Rule of 7x7' is not just a show, it is a party, or rather a novel idea executed extremely well. There is the volatility of not knowing what to expect with a new set of playwrights, but the price is right at $12 including a free beer. Give it a try. Good luck 'Rule of 7x7.' The audience loves you!"

"Each of the plays could have benefited from more rehearsal. Sometimes, the actors focused more on performing rather than reacting to their scene partners. The relationships between characters didn’t always resonate. The stars of the night were definitely the playwrights, each of whom penned stories that ranged from funny to thought-provoking to moving to downright wacky. If you haven’t made your way to check out the series yet, you should."
