Karin Coonrod directs Shakespeare's KING LEAR with 10 diverse actors using a paper crown concept.
Compagnia de’ Colombari’s production of KING LEAR utilizes director Karin Coonrod's signature "multiplicity" technique, featuring ten diverse actors—varying in age and gender—who initially embody the title role wearing paper crowns. Their unity fractures as they remove the crowns and transform into other characters, competing for influence, which diminishes the legion of Lears. The adaptation, presented in five "movements," focuses on the internal and external journey of King Lear, a stubborn figure who must endure immense loss to achieve self-discovery. Through vigorous exploration of the characters’ egos, motivations, and power dynamics, the production aims to strip the Shakespearean classic to its essence, suggesting that transformation occurs in the midst of an "apocalypse."
