A Texas teen’s puppet develops a foul mouth in Robert Askins’ dark comedy of faith and fury.
Set in the quiet town of Cypress, Texas, Hand to God follows Jason, a shy teenager grappling with grief after the loss of his father. To cope, he joins his church’s Christian Puppet Ministry. But when his hand puppet Tyrone takes on a chaotic and profane personality of its own, Jason’s world begins to spiral. As Tyrone’s behavior becomes increasingly outrageous, tensions emerge within Jason’s family, school, and congregation, forcing everyone to confront uncomfortable truths about morality, repression, and control.
The play is written by Robert Askins and originally premiered Off-Broadway before transferring to Broadway in 2015, where it received five Tony Award nominations including Best Play. Known for its shocking humor and psychological insight, the play juxtaposes dark comedy with emotional depth. The Gallery Players production is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC (servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection).
