Interactive play on post-pandemic mental health in The Bronx, with an audience-driven ending.
Burned follows Linda, a Bronx native and former hospital worker during the COVID-19 pandemic. After leaving her job and losing her home, she moves in with her sister Chelsea, hoping for support. Instead, she faces bullying from Chelsea’s boyfriend and dismissal from her sister, who downplays her struggles. Emotionally drained and battling her own mental health challenges, Linda’s story unfolds toward multiple possible outcomes—each decided by the audience at every performance.
The production is part of Pregones/PRTT’s free INTERACTIVE Theater initiative, which addresses post-pandemic mental wellness in The Bronx. Written by Alejandra Ramos Riera in collaboration with the community, the play draws from real conversations held during and after performances in the initiative’s first year.
Under the creative leadership of Jorge B. Merced, Associate Artistic Director of Pregones/PRTT, Burned aims to raise awareness of post-COVID mental health challenges—particularly within the Latinx/Hispanic community—and to connect audiences with existing mental health resources.
