A history play on international anti-fascist fighters in 1937 Spain, co-written by James Clements and Sam Hood Adrain.
At the Barricades is a source-based history play set during the Spanish Civil War, focusing on six individuals from the United States, Spain, and Scotland who join the fight against Franco’s fascist coup. The story begins on the outskirts of Madrid in January 1937 and follows the characters over the course of a year as they confront the political, emotional, and physical tolls of war. As their loyalties and personal connections evolve, each is forced to reckon with the shifting realities of a brutal and complex conflict.
The play is co-written by James Clements and Sam Hood Adrain, Co-Artistic Directors of What Will the Neighbors Say?. It was developed in partnership with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA), whose resources helped ground the play in historical documentation and testimony.
Development support came through a residency at NYU’s Espacio de Culturas at KJCC, with direction by Federica Borlenghi and script supervision by Skye Pallo Ross. Additional development took place at the Brooklyn Art Haus, supported by the Brooklyn Arts Council.
