A moving memoir blending science and story, exploring the flow of life and sand.
In Rheology, playwright and director Shayok Misha Chowdhury collaborates with his mother, physicist Bulbul Chakraborty, in a theatrical exploration of art, science, and familial connection. The piece centers on their shared curiosity about the nature of sand—how it behaves as both liquid and solid—and transforms that inquiry into an intimate dialogue about love, time, and legacy between a son and his mother.
The production merges scientific inquiry with poetic storytelling. Chowdhury, known for his formally inventive works that merge music, movement, and text, draws on his personal relationship with Chakraborty to construct a layered experiment between disciplines and generations.Â
Produced by The Bushwick Starr, HERE Arts Center, and Ma-Yi Theater Company, the play continues Playwrights Horizons’ tradition of presenting bold, boundary-pushing works that challenge theatrical form.
