Trajal Harrell’s North American premiere blends voguing, butoh, fashion, and theater in a Mondrian-inspired dance spectacle.
Acclaimed choreographer and Guggenheim fellow Trajal Harrell brings the North American premiere of his latest work to the Park Avenue Armory. Known for fusing voguing, butoh, and post-modern dance into transcultural hybrid forms, Harrell has developed a distinctive style that reimagines history while bridging artistic traditions. This new creation expands on that vision, intersecting dance, theater, fashion, history, and music.
The work features a large cast of dancers and actors performing on a Mondrian-inspired colored grid that spans the stage. More than 60 costumes, designed by Harrell, transform the performance into a living runway where everyday gestures, extravagant poses, historical imagery, and pop culture collide. The piece juxtaposes the intimate and the spectacular, reflecting Harrell’s signature interplay of references and styles.
Drawing inspiration from the Declaration of Independence, the performance considers the ideals of freedom and the inequalities that have persisted since its writing, while also celebrating community as a space of resilience and imagination.
