A reimagining with tap dance, foley, and movement, directed by Amy Marie Seidel.
Inspired by the 1926 case of Ruth Snyder, Machinal explores a woman’s struggle against a mechanized, conformist society. The play follows her descent into desperation and rebellion, culminating in a shocking act of violence. Sophie Treadwell’s expressionist text presents a powerful meditation on gender, societal expectation, and the crushing weight of modern life.
This reimagined production is directed by Amy Marie Seidel (Here There Are Blueberries, The Great Gatsby), and incorporates a dynamic underscoring of tap dance, practical foley effects, and heightened movement vocabulary created by choreographer Madison Hilligoss. Scenic design by Rochele Mac, costume design by Hahnji Jang, lighting design by Colleen Doherty, and sound design by Brittany Harris further enhance the production’s mechanical and expressionist aesthetic. Asha Devi serves as dramaturg, with Kimberly Immanuel as Associate Choreographer and Grace Cutler as Associate Director.
The cast includes Katherine Winter, Temidayo Amay, Sam Im, Kimberly Immanuel, Soph Metcalf, Shelley Mitchell, Alice Reys, Veronica Simpson, Hannah Snow, Michael Verre, Alex Lauren, and Annaliese Wilbur. This production is presented by New York Theatre Company at New York City Center.
