Directed by Alex Timbers with music by Laurence O’Keefe in a satirical pop-rock horror tale.
In a small West Virginia town, a mysterious creature—half-human, half-bat—is discovered in a cave and taken in by a local family. Named Edgar, the teenage Bat Boy longs for acceptance and struggles to suppress his animal instincts as he tries to integrate into the conservative community. But as tensions rise and secrets emerge, the town’s search for a scapegoat puts Edgar’s future in jeopardy in this darkly comic and tragic fable.
This revival is directed by Tony Award-winner Alex Timbers, whose previous work includes Beetlejuice and Moulin Rouge! The Musical. The show features a pop-rock score by Laurence O’Keefe, best known for Legally Blonde: The Musical, with orchestrations created by Alex Lacamoire (Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen) and expanded for this new staging. Bat Boy: The Musical first premiered Off-Broadway in 2001 and quickly earned a cult following.
Presented as part of City Center’s Encores! series, the production continues the venue’s tradition of reviving genre-defying musicals.
