Set in Venice and Cyprus, Othello follows the downfall of a celebrated general in the Venetian army. Othello, a Black man in a white society, secretly marries Desdemona, the daughter of a powerful senator. When Othello promotes Cassio over his ensign, Iago, a campaign of calculated revenge begins. Iago exploits Othello’s insecurities—about his outsider status, his marriage, and his position—gradually manipulating him into believing that Desdemona has been unfaithful. As trust corrodes and jealousy takes hold, the consequences become irrevocable.
This new Broadway production stars Tony® and Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington as Othello and Tony and Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago. The play is directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon, known for his acclaimed work, including Purlie Victorious and Our Town.
This revival presents a stripped-back and high-stakes staging of one of Shakespeare's most psychologically intricate works.
